How to hash files and folders, read the results, and export a report — start to finish.

Walkthrough

Run your first hashing session

Open FileToHash

Launch the app from the Start menu after installing it from the Microsoft Store.

Select a file or folder

Use Add File or Add Folder to choose what you want to hash. You can queue multiple items for a batch session.

Choose your algorithm(s)

Pick MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, or a combination, depending on your case requirements.

Run the hash

Start the session. FileToHash reads each item and computes the selected digest values, flagging any file that changes mid-hash.

Review results

Check file names, paths, algorithms, digest values, and timestamps in the results list.

Export a report

Export the session as a PDF report for documentation, or as CSV for further analysis.

Tip

Re-hash a file after any suspected change and compare the new digest to the original — a mismatch means the content is different, even if the file name and size look the same.

If the integrity warning appears

Stop and re-run the hash on the affected item before relying on the result. The warning means the file was modified while FileToHash was reading it.

Reference

Working with audit logs

Every hashing session is recorded in a signed log entry. FileToHash uses HMAC-SHA256 to sign each entry, so if a log is edited after the fact, the signature check will fail — helping you notice unexpected changes.
