Plain-language limits on what FileToHash's outputs mean, and what they don't.
1. General
FileToHash is a tool that supports forensic and integrity-verification workflows. It is not a substitute for professional forensic training, established chain-of-custody procedures, or legal advice.
2. No guarantee of legal admissibility
FileToHash supports forensic workflows by generating reproducible hash values and structured reports. It does not guarantee that any hash value, report, or log will be accepted as evidence by any court, tribunal, regulator, or other body. Admissibility depends on the rules of the relevant jurisdiction, your overall evidence-handling process, and factors outside the Software's control.
3. "Tamper-evident," not "tamper-proof"
FileToHash's audit logs are signed using HMAC-SHA256 and are described as tamper-evident: designed to help you detect unexpected changes to a log after the fact. No local desktop software can honestly be described as completely tamper-proof, and FileToHash does not claim to be. Anyone with sufficient access to a device can potentially interfere with locally stored data.
4. Accuracy of results
Hash values are calculated using standard, published algorithms (MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256). Results depend on the file being read correctly at the time of hashing. If a file changes while it is being hashed, FileToHash will flag the session, but you remain responsible for re-verifying results before relying on them.
5. Professional judgment required
Decisions about evidence handling, chain of custody, case documentation, and legal strategy should be made by qualified professionals using their own judgment and applicable procedures — FileToHash is one tool within that process, not a replacement for it.
6. Not professional or legal advice
Nothing on this website or within FileToHash constitutes legal, forensic, or professional advice. Consult a qualified professional for guidance specific to your situation.
